WHEN:      TUESDAY     26 JUNE 2018

6 PM    BOARD OF WATER  COMMISSIONERS

                    7PM     PUBLIC COMMENTS

WHERE:     Gaffney School, 322 Slater Road, New Britain CT.

***OVER 2,700 people sign petition AGAINST Tilcon’s plan to strip-mine watershed***

Below, find excerpts from “Water Planning Council’s” Review Pursuant to Public Act 16-61 of the City of New Britain’s Report entitled Environmental Study: Change in Use of New Britain Water Company Land (Proposed Quarry Expansion and Future Water Storage Reservoir)

"The WPC finds that the city’s report does not substantiate the need for the proposed new reservoir or, in fact, that the proposed reservoir would even be a viable public water storage facility. "

"The city’s Water Supply Plan and the WUCC Integrated Report show that the New Britain Water Department has excess water supply with respect to demand now and through the 50-year planning period, even using the increased demand projections provided by Lenard Engineering, without a new reservoir. "

"...the WPC finds that preparation for quarrying, including clear- cutting the forest and removing the stumps, soil and other natural material, followed by quarry operations, would eliminate much of the wild habitat of the site while creating the potential for decades of increased risk to the city’s nearby Shuttle Meadow Reservoir."

The Tilcon Quarry Expansion: What’s at Stake

Presentation by: John Sokolowski

Sponsored by: Protect Our Watersheds Connecticut

The public is invited to come see, hear, and learn about New Britain’s Shuttle Meadow
Reservoir watershed and what is at stake in Tilcon-CT’s proposal to gain an exception to
state laws protecting watershed land in order to expand its Plainville quarry southward into
132 acres of New Britain-owned watershed. This mining proposal threatens the streams and
aquifers supplying drinking water wells, the Shuttle Meadow Reservoir, and Crescent Lake.

See how the watershed forest:
• increases safe drinking water supply
• provides a healthy habitat for living things
• purifies air, land, and water in our region

Screening of "Tapped" at New Britain Public Library

On Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 SAVE OUR WATER CT and PROTECT OUR WATERSHEDS CT will present a community water forum, including a showing of the documentary film, “Tapped.” The event will take place at the New Britain Public Library, 20 South High Street, New Britain.

Water is our most precious natural resource.  CT is experiencing severe drought, with many communities taking extreme measures to conserve and acquire water. It is critical that we protect our water. Come and learn more about this important issue.

“Tapped” is an award-winning documentary about the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, and pollution. As Niagara Water Bottling Co. builds its plant in Bloomfield, CT, it is time to educate ourselves about the impact of the water bottling industry on our water supplies and our environment. At the same time, New Britain is facing threats to its protected, watershed lands which are crucial to maintaining safe drinking water. Members of Save Our Water CT and Protect Our Watersheds CT will be present for a Q and A after the showing and to give an update on citizens’ efforts to protect CT’s water.

It is time for all of us in CT to educate ourselves -water threats can happen anywhere in our state.
